The Lazy Man’s Indoor Cardio Workout

televisionSome days it is really hard to find enough motivation to get a regular workout in. As much as I love running, the occasional workout video, and long walks with the dog, some days, when it is raining, all I really feel like doing is sitting on the sofa and watching some really bad TV and eating popcorn. That is why I have put together my ‘lazy day’ workout. It is my routine for those days when I would rather skip, but know that my smartphone apps are going to criticize me for skipping a day, and I will lose points on my leader board (Gotta love those apps!) Here is my lazy man workout.

March – This is when I am always happy that no one can see my lazy man workout. I put on my favorite show on Netflix, strap on my running shoes, and march in place for a good 10-15 minutes. This is a great way to warm up, and after awhile, my blood starts circulating and I don’t feel quite as bad about workingout than I did before I started.

Jumping jacks – Once my blood is pumping a little bit, I set the timer on my phone for 1-2 minutes and do jumping jacks for that period of time. This is a great way to help get you moving, but you can still vegetate in front of the TV.

Walk it out arm swings– When you are finished with your jumping jacks, take a few minutes to just walk it out. As you walk it out, swing your arms around like a windmill, first forward and then back. This is a good way to keep your heart rate up a bit, but not to tire yourself out too much.

Rinse and repeat – Repeat the whole routine once more (or twice if you are so inclined).

Jog around the room – I know some people who run in place, but I find this really ends up hurting my calves the next day, so one little thing I kept from my Wii fit workouts, is jogging in little circles around my living room, when the weather is too crappy out and I don’t want to pull out my trampoline. You can do this silly routine during commercial breaks or set the timer on your  iPhone for a few minutes. And if you don’t want your neighbors watching, be sure to close your taupe curtains.

Skip around the room – I know, this looks ridiculous, but no one is watching. Alternate between skipping and running around the room.

At the end of the day this is not an ideal workout, but it is one you can do without fancy equipment while watching re-runs of the West Wing, and some days that kind of exercise is better than none.
