Using Pedometers to up Your Cardio

The basic pedometer will count your steps. You could get a basic pedometer for $5, or you could spend a little extra, and get an even better basic pedometer. These are great for people starting with a fitness program. A premium pedometer typically offers the option of wearing it or carrying it. In other words, you do not necessarily have to place this one on your hip. These can be programmed to your workout style. It typically has more data options such as storage and counting calories burned. Pedometer plus devices typically come in a wrist watch form. These will help to track your daily heart rate, steps taken, calories burned, and more.

Simply putting a pedometer on your body will only get you so far in your workout. Your pedometer should have your stride programmed into it. This can be measured by measuring out a specific distance, counting the number of steps it took for you to walk that distance, and then dividing the distance by the number of steps you took. Pedometers should be worn as specified by the manufacturer.

A pedometer can be used to keep track of your workouts. For example, one mile of walking is typically equivalent to about 2000 steps. Creating goals for yourself, such as walking 10,000 steps a day, can be a great way to get into workouts. This also give you a motivator to get those calories burned and to increase your step count. While 10,000 steps seems like a lot, think about it in terms of miles. Five miles a day is really attainable if you be sure to get up and walk around to do things instead of taking elevators or escalators. Walking at a 15 minutes per mile pace for 30 minutes will get you 4,000 steps! Seem doable? I think so!
