medical exercise expertQ:  I am 61 and have been taking care of my sick husband for a few years.  I want to start to exercise, so I can be healthy.  How much exercise do I need to do to get the most benefit health wise?

A:  Great question!  Many people exercise to feel good, and to look good.  But from a standpoint of the health of your body, there are 3 types of exercise you must perform.  First, any activity is very important to health, just moving throughout the day.  So for this you should be walking the equivalent of 10,000 steps a day.  There are some very nice simple technologies that can track this for you.  Second, you have to perform resistance exercises, to basically weights or machines that push against you.  You only need 30 minutes a week of this type of exercise.  Lastly, you have to perform cardiovascular exercise, or something that makes you sweat, whether it is running, spinning, or something else for 20 minutes at least 3 times per week.  This will keep you in a healthy lifestyle.  Watch this video from the Cleveland Clinic.
