Breakfast is for Champions

In all the gym joints in all the towns, in all the world, they all appear to all have one message: EAT BREAKFAST! Yes, this seems to be a universal slogan that does prove to be the best advice when nutrition comes into play. Studies show that besides controlling weight loss, this meal also adds fuel to the body (one that will be more likely to exercise).

So why do people skip breakfast? Well one reason is they tend to believe that shunning a meal will cut calories. Unfortunately, they choose breakfast as that meal, which is the one they should be enjoying instead of avoiding. Another reason for dodging breakfast is they just don’t have the time; however, it is in their best interest to find the time.

Skipping breakfast tends to take your body into a starvation mode; this tricks the mind into eating more at lunch, and typically higher calorie and fatty foods that will satisfy the appetite. I always wanted to start an “eat breakfast” campaign, so I’ll start today with you the readers who are mindful and health conscious. I’m sure some of you always manage to consume this meal on a daily basis. If you don’t, perhaps now is the best time to begin your morning with a good healthy meal that will carry you throughout the day.

The Mayo Clinic states that eating a healthy breakfast has many benefits, such as adding vitamins and minerals, eating less fat, lowering cholesterol, and controlling your weight. By consuming whole grains, low-fat protein, and dairy products, as well as fruit and vegetables, you can reap the rewards of your actions.

Another choice for breakfast from Milton Stokes, RD and chief dietician for St. Barnabas Hospital in New York, is a high fiber breakfast. An optimal cereal is one that would have 3-5 grams per serving. Breakfast does not have to be elaborate; simple is best. He always keeps frozen berries on hand, because they are picked at their peak time and frozen immediately. Peanut butter, eggs, low-fat milk/yogurt, are more good ideas for what should be included on your morning menu. Try avoiding that bagel that is equivalent to 5 slices of bread, or the fast food breakfast sandwich, which may be loaded with fat and sodium.

Make breakfast a ritual. If you stick with it, you will be amazed at what this simple meal can do for you. Break out your fine china for breakfast, and you will enjoy it even more. It may be a psychological phenomenon, but take it from me it will taste better, and you will want to continue with your morning routine. Feel free to eat your whole-grain Wheaties so that you can become a champion once again!
