Soulcycle – the New Indoor Cycling Trend

bicycleWhat started as a cult workout in a little back room in NYC is starting to spread across the Tri-state area, revolutionizing indoor cycling and making it just a little bit more interesting.

If you are like me, the idea of sitting on a bicycle going nowhere for any period of time is not the most pleasant. Now imagine someone screaming at you to go faster on your bike ride to nowhere. That pretty much sums up the typical Spinning class for me.

Not that I don’t enjoy a good bike ride. I am lucky enough to live in an area where biking is actually a major form of transport for me on a daily basis. I bike to my office, I bike my kid to school and I bike to the store. I enjoy biking around our local park. But part of the thrill of biking for me is the wind blowing through my hair, the nice landscape, and the getting from point A to point B.

It’s funny, because I am usually OK with running on a treadmill to nowhere, but biking in place is much more tedious to me. So after one spinning class, I called it quits, even if I burned a gagillion calories.

So when I was visiting a friend in NYC this summer and she suggested we try Soulcycling, I said thanks, but no thanks, let’s try Citibike in stead. But she wouldn’t shut up about how much Soulcycling was 100% better than any regular spinning class and would get my post-pregnancy body back in gear.

So I went. The short summary? Soulcycling is an AMAZING workout. The workout is fun and even entertaining at times, if you aren’t in so much pain you do not notice. But even with all of that, it is still a bicycle ride to nowhere. If you are OK with that, then get yourself to the nearest Soulcycle workout.

What it is: It is a spinning class with 10 different extras. Most of those extras have to do with a zany trainer who attempts to do things with a bicycle you wouldn’t expect outside of the circus. Thankfully they do not request you do many of those wacky moves (although you are invited to try some of them!).

It is a grizzly spinning workout with weights that hang from the ceiling that you can use to optimize your workout to get a full body workout. You will feel your upper body, your lower body, your core, and any other muscle group you do not workout to superstar status.

If you live in NYC or in the surrounding areas, you are in luck. If you live anywhere else, you will have to wait until the Soulcycle fever hits and spreads across the US.
